Alfred State student recites original poem
Students, faculty, and staff at Alfred State College participated in the fall poetry reading event hosted by the Department of English and Humanities.
Held each semester, the poetry reading event in the Allegany Hall allows all members of the university community to share an open microphone. The event featured music by Tim Bocchi, a variety of desserts from the Culinary Arts Department, and student artwork.
Calista McBride, Department Chair and Professor in the Department of English and Humanities, welcomed the crowd. “It’s because of you. Because of the creativity that is in each of you. We hope that when you arrive with us, you will have a rebirth of wonder. That’s what we do here and why we are here.
New this semester, Travis Matteson, assistant professor in the Department of English and Humanities, worked with viewers to create poetry from the answers to two questions: is he a trailblazer and does he give advice at your high school?
How to be a pioneer – A poem written by attendees of the Fall 2022 Poetry Reading
Fight no more!
Love yourself and appreciate your uniqueness.
A Pioneer is someone who gives their all in everything they do.
Ask Kate, “Why?” when she hands you a book.
A Pioneer is built differently.
There is simply too much to say and much to experience. The numbness you feel will leave abrasions; scrapes built up over a decade. Breathe with self-love and patience, a solid foundation finally began with foreign help and careful decisions.
Go to Computers.
Try everything, you’re doing very well!
A pioneer is a student whose goals are to make someone proud.
A Pioneer is someone who strives for excellence.
A pioneer is a leader.
A pioneer is our future.
A pioneer is an explorer, an inventor and a pioneer.
A pioneer is a passionate and motivated person.
Beware of the woman.
University does not kill creativity.
Relax more often and take care of yourself. Follow the advice you give to others. (PS Don’t worry about homework).
It’s not as important as you think.
A pioneer is lost along the Oregon Trail. You died of dysentery!
A pioneer is surely to blame.
A Pioneer is a Revolutionary.
A Pioneer is exhausted.
A pioneer is a mystic.
This poem and other original poems recited by students have been submitted for inclusion in ergonomicsthe literary and artistic publication of Alfred State which appears semi-annually.
