My favorite workouts are pull-ups and push-ups. If you don’t know how to do it, practice — preteen CrossFitter Atiana Tenorio.
Loud music, solar tents were set up in the parking lot and energetic people competed for a spot on the podium at the Festivus Games in Rio Rancho.
Some 8,000 to 10,000 athletes competed around the world at various host sites, while hundreds recently gathered in Rio Rancho at the CrossFit Thunderhawks gym.
Among them was CrossFit competitor Jocelyn Shade.
“My team and I have said before that we want to be 70-year-old men doing circle burpees,” Shade said. “That’s the cool thing about fitness, you can always do better, there’s no age.”
According to Party games website, The Festivus Games are a global functional fitness competition for beginner and intermediate athletes. And yes, the name comes from Seinfeld episode “The Strike” in which Frank Costanza creates holidays to rival Christmas and creates traditions such as “tours de force”.
The CrossFit community came together to compete and featured competitors of all ages, including CrossFit Thunderhawks’ own Preteen team.
“We decided, since we have a family gym and we have a strong program for children and youth, to include them in the competition,” said CrossFit Thunderhawk owner Antinelly Soto Hernández. “So we proposed to add a pre-teen division to the original Festivus gaming competition.”
Hernández and her husband Cesar Javier Hernández are the owners of the gymnasium. Both have active MD licenses in New Mexico. According to CrossFit websitein 2016, their gym was the first to offer a children’s CrossFit program in the city of Rio Rancho.
One of the pre-teen WODs (workout of the day) for the Festivus Games included a five-minute timer, a buy-in of Russian Kettlebell Swings followed by an AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) of Chin-Over-Bar Pull-Ups or Ring Rows and burpee box overs.
Did you follow all of this? Workouts like these are standard for any CrossFitter.
“My favorite workouts are pull-ups and push-ups,” said preteen CrossFitter Atiana Tenorio. “If you don’t know how to do it, practice.”
